This walkthrough covers the main quest of Tears of the Kingdom: the Great Sky Island, the four Regional Phenomena and their temples, the Spirit Temple in the Depths, the Master Sword, and the final battle with Ganondorf. After the Great Sky Island and Lookout Landing, you can do the four regions in any order. For the location of every shrine, Lightroot, Korok seed and cave, see our interactive map and the Shrines page.
A few basics before you start:
- Link's abilities: Ultrahand picks up objects and sticks them together, Fuse attaches items to your weapons, shields and arrows, Ascend takes you straight up through ceilings, and Recall rewinds an object's movement. You get them all on the Great Sky Island.
- Skyview Towers: launch from a tower to soar high into the sky, and scan the area to fill in your map.
- Shrines and Lights of Blessing: each shrine gives a Light of Blessing; trade four at a Goddess Statue for a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.
- Gloom: the red-black Gloom in the Depths and from Ganondorf's attacks damages your maximum hearts until you rest or eat something that restores them, such as Sundelions.
1. The Great Sky Island
- Beneath Hyrule Castle, Link and Zelda find a strange mummified figure. Ganondorf awakens, the Master Sword breaks, and Zelda disappears. Link wakes up in the Room of Awakening on the Great Sky Island with a new right arm. Take the sword, cut through the vines and climb out, picking up some legwear on the way.
- On the island, find the Purah Pad and take a sword and shield from a Soldier Construct. The door of the Temple of Time is closed, and Rauru's spirit sends you to the island's shrines.
- Clear the shrines to learn your abilities: Ukouh Shrine gives Ultrahand, In-isa Shrine gives Fuse, and Gutanbac Shrine gives Ascend. Bring an Energy Cell to open the Temple of Time.
- Nachoyah Shrine ("The Ability to Rewind") gives Recall. Inside the Temple of Time, pray at the Goddess Statue for your first Heart Container, then cross the bridge with Ascend.
- Dive off the island's edge and skydive down to Hyrule.
2. Lookout Landing
- Walk north to Lookout Landing, a new settlement south of Hyrule Castle, where Purah and Josha are studying the strange events.
- Purah asks you to find the search party at Hyrule Castle ("Crisis at Hyrule Castle"). Meet Captain Hoz at the gatehouse.
- Back at Lookout Landing, Purah gives you the Paraglider. Activate the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower to launch into the air and map the area.
- Purah then tells you about the trouble in four regions, the Regional Phenomena: Hebra, Eldin, Lanayru and Gerudo. You can tackle them in any order.
3. Hebra: Tulin and the Wind Temple
- A blizzard is battering Rito Village. Bring warm clothing. Find the young Rito Tulin, who joins you, and climb the chain of sky islands to the storm's source.
- The Wind Temple is a great sky ship. Unlock its five locks by starting five windmill turbines, using Tulin's gust to blow them around. You'll use Ultrahand on icicles and doors, Ascend, and glide past laser defenses. The outside of the ship is bitterly cold.
- Boss: Colgera. The whole fight takes place in the air. Glide above Colgera, then drop through the glowing ice cores on its back to shatter them. Use Tulin's gust to get through its tornadoes. Take the Heart Container. Tulin awakens as the Sage of Wind, and his gust pushes you farther when you glide.
4. Eldin: Yunobo and the Fire Temple
- The Gorons of Goron City have become addicted to strange marbled rocks. Buy the Flamebreaker Armor in Goron City to protect yourself from the heat. Find Yunobo at YunoboCo HQ, where you have to fight him first.
- With Yunobo's help, ride the mine carts up Death Mountain and beat the beast Moragia, then glide into the crater to reach the Depths and the Fire Temple.
- The Fire Temple is sealed with five padlocks. Unlock each one by having Yunobo roll into a gong. Use Zonai devices to cross the lava and switch the mine cart rails.
- Boss: Marbled Gohma. Launch Yunobo at its legs to break them. When it collapses, climb up and attack its eye. At half health it climbs onto the ceiling; send Yunobo rolling up the wall to knock it down. Take the Heart Container. Yunobo becomes the Sage of Fire, and his charge smashes rocks.
5. Lanayru: Sidon and the Water Temple
- Toxic sludge is falling on Zora's Domain. Restore the Zora Armor for Yona so you can swim up waterfalls, and meet Sidon.
- Follow the sludge back to its source in the sky above Wellspring Island, where you'll find the Water Temple.
- Open the temple's four faucets. Use Sidon's water bubbles and Splash Fruit to wash away the sludge, and solve the puzzles with Hover Stones, orbs and waterwheels.
- Boss: Mucktorok. It hides in the sludge. Wash it out with Sidon's water or Splash Fruit, then attack. At half health it covers the arena in sludge puddles; shoot it with arrows in slow motion as it escapes. Take the Heart Container. Sidon becomes the Sage of Water, and his water shield protects you.
6. Gerudo: Riju and the Lightning Temple
- A sandstorm has buried Gerudo Town and its people have taken shelter. Riju is training in the ruins. She calls down lightning wherever you shoot an arrow into her circle.
- Help defend the town from the Gibdos: destroy the three Gibdo hives at the gates with Riju's lightning when their cores glow. Then solve the three-pillar light puzzle to reveal the way to the Lightning Temple.
- Activate the temple's four batteries, using light beams, mirrors and Riju's lightning.
- Boss: Queen Gibdo. Hit her with Riju's lightning while she's inside the circle to stun her, then attack. Her whirlwinds cancel the circle, so wait and recast. At half health, destroy the hives that keep spawning Gibdos. Take the Heart Container. Riju becomes the Sage of Lightning, and her lightning strikes where you shoot.
7. Hyrule Castle and the Spirit Temple
- With the four regions done, Purah sends you to Hyrule Castle. Launch from the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower and glide north, then climb through the castle's ruins to the Sanctum. The "Zelda" waiting there is an impostor. Boss: Phantom Ganon fights with a group of copies; stun the one leaving a puddle of Gloom. Take the Heart Container.
- The secret of the Ring Ruins leads you to the Thunderhead Isles and down into the Depths, where the spirit of the Zonai sage Mineru asks you to rebuild her construct body at the Construct Factory.
- Ride Mineru's Construct across the Depths to the Spirit Temple.
- Boss: Seized Construct. You fight riding Mineru's Construct, in a ring surrounded by electrified wire. Knock the Seized Construct into the wire to damage it, and block its punches. At half health it grows extra arms and starts flying. Take the Heart Container. Mineru becomes the Sage of Spirit.
8. The Dragon's Tears
- Near New Serenne Stable, meet Impa. Repair her balloon with Ultrahand and float up to the first geoglyph, a huge drawing on the ground. In its center is a Dragon's Tear; touch it to recover a memory.
- At the Forgotten Temple, Impa shows you a map of the geoglyphs. There are 12 tears in all. Find the first eleven, and the last one appears. Watch the memories to learn what happened to Zelda.
9. The Master Sword
- Hestu tells you something is wrong in Korok Forest. Find your way through the Lost Woods and down into the Depths to reach the roots of the Great Deku Tree, defeating Phantom Ganon there.
- The Deku Tree tells you the Master Sword is with the Light Dragon, which flies over Hyrule. Launch from a Skyview Tower, land on the dragon's head, and draw the sword. You need enough stamina to pull it out: at least five Stamina Vessels' worth.
10. Ganondorf
- Dive into the Hyrule Castle Chasm and fight down through the Demon King's army to Gloom's Lair. Any temple bosses you skipped must be fought here.
- Demon King Ganondorf fights with sword, spear and club. Keep your shield up and dodge his attacks to trigger Flurry Rushes. Partway through, he summons copies of Phantom Ganon, and your Sages arrive to help. Then he fights you alone, firing rings of Gloom.
- The Demon Dragon: the Light Dragon carries you into the sky. Dive onto the Demon Dragon's back and destroy its eyes with the Master Sword, then strike the stone glowing on its forehead.
Congratulations, you've finished Tears of the Kingdom! If you completed the Dragon's Tears quest, keep watching after the credits for an extra scene.
