The Princess of Hyrule, who is kidnapped early on by Agahnim. Link attempts to rescue her but is too late and is forced to watch Zelda used as a final sacrifice to open the Dark World.

The Dark Wizard, Agahnim, is a priest who, by unknown circumstances, was possessed by Ganon. Ganon hoped that by using Agahnim, he could break the seal that was put on him by the Seven Wise Men.

Ganon

Ganon is trapped in the Dark World by the Seven Wise Men before the start of the game, but is able to possess the Dark Wizard Agahnim in an attempt to free himself from the Dark World.

Maidens

Maidens 

With the help of Agahnim, Ganon imprisoned 7 maidens in the Dark World, including Princess Zelda.  Link has to rescue them to unlock Ganon's Tower and claim back the Triforce.

Sells bombs, hearts, and magic potions.

The old man's son disappeared a long time ago and he can now be found in Kakariko inn sleeping and drinking.

Gambling Boy

He runs a treasure chest game where Link can pay 20 rupees and take what's inside one of three treasure chests.

The Old Woman is an elderly woman that can be found sweeping in front of her house.

Quarreling Brothers

These brothers are in a fight and one brother sealed the door to the other brother's room.  When Link bombs the door open he reveals a passageway to the 15 second game.

Owns the game where Link has to complete a race within 15 seconds for a Piece of Heart.

This woman calls the guards when she sees Link.

Saharashala

He hides out in Eastern Palace when all the trouble starts in Hyrule and gives Link the Pegasus Boots after he collects his first pendant.

The Man is found at the entrance to the Desert of Mystery. He will sit in meditation, not speaking to Link unless Link messes with the sign next to him.

Witch's Assistant

Witch's Assistant

After giving the Witch the Magic Mushroom, her assistant will give Link Magic Powder.  She also restores his life with a free sample of the red potion whenever he talks to her.

Saharashala's Grandson

Saharashala's Grandson tells Link where he can find his Grandfather.

Bug-Catching Kid

This kid has become sick and lends Link his bug-catching net until he gets better.

When Link first goes to the Dark World, this guy is being kicked around by the Bully.

The bully can be found in the Dark World on Death Mountain, kicking his friend around.

This guy owns several item shops in the Dark World.

If you manage to find a Fairy, your life will be restored.

Flute Boy

Flute Boy

This boy accidentally entered the Dark World, although his ghost can still be seen at the haunted grove in the Light World.  In the Dark World he lends Link his shovel, which Link uses to find his flute for him.  After hearing the sound of the flute for a final time, the Flute Boy lets Link keep the Flute.

Fortune Teller

For a fee, the fortune teller will give Link clues as to what he needs to do next.

Kiki

Kiki

Kiki the monkey likes rupees more than anything else.  For 10 rupees he will follow Link around.  After that, he will open the Dark Palace for 100 rupees.

King

King

The King of Hyrule, he allowed Agahnim to come in and solve Hyrule's problems during a time of plague, then Agahnim began the plot to send the 7 maidens to the Dark World so that Ganon could eventually conquer both worlds.  He returns to Hyrule after Ganon has been defeated.

King Zora sells Link the flippers for 500 rupees.

Lumberjacks

Lumberjacks

The lumberjacks are cutting down a tree and notice it feels strange as they're working on it.  After Agahnim is defeated Link discovers the tree is hollow and contains a piece of heart.

Old Man

Link meets the old man on his first trip to Death Mountain and receives the Magic Mirror from him.

The priest lives in the Sanctuary and keeps Princess Zelda hidden from Agahnim while Link collects the 3 pendants.

Running Man

If Link can catch the running man, he'll tell Link the secret of dashing into trees with the Pegasus Boots for items.

These wise men can offer Link advice if he can find them.

Salesman

Salesman

He sells Link a bottle and will also buy fish and the Good Bee if Link can find it.

Hobo

If Link talks to the hobo under the bridge, he will give him a bottle.

This guy is always found talking in Kakariko Inn.

Smithy

His partner has been lost.  When Link finds him in the Dark World and returns him to the Blacksmith's hut, they will temper his sword to make it more powerful for a measly 10 rupees.

Soldier

The guards that once fought against you are there to defend Hyrule after Ganon is defeated and Agahnim's magic no longer controls them.

Thief

Thief

They can be found in the Lost Woods.  If a thief runs into Link, he will drop some of his items, and they will steal some of them.

Link's Uncle

Link's Uncle

He sets off on a quest to defeat Agahnim, but doesn't get very far.  He gives Link his sword and shield.

Venus

Venus

The Queen of Fairies.  If you drop 100 rupees in her Wishing Well, she will upgrade the number of bombs or arrows you can carry.

If you give her the Magic Mushroom, she will make Magic Powder for you.
